From her earliest days she has been drawn to dogs. She absolutely loves them. She began begging for a puppy, but we knew we would be moving last summer and the timing wasn't right. Her desire for a puppy became even fiercer after we had to put our beloved Gizmo to sleep last March. We promised that once we moved to Virginia and got settled, we would add that new puppy to our family. Her dream came true last November when we drove to Nashville to pick up a new cavachon puppy, Hugo. (a mixed breed of Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Bichon Frise)
We are all head over heels in love with Mister Hugo. He's been so good for our family. It is interesting, though, how he relates to all four of us in different ways. He knows the various roles we hold and the hierarchy that is held. He loves to douse me in affection and comes to me for petting. He knows Shawn is the one who plays rough and fun and his tail never wags faster than when Shawn walks his way. He enjoys the Boy's company and loves to play with him, knowing he can play-bite him a little harder than perhaps me and certainly the Lady. And somehow Hugo knows that the Lady is the last in the Pace family line and from what we can gather, holds her as an equal, or perhaps below him in the line.
He chases her and growls at her heels like he does no other. Her giggles and running just seem to egg him on. He pushes the boundaries and has hurt her so many times we've lost count. She's still learning how to exert her authority and how cause and effect work (if you put your face near his mouth, you may get scratched by his teeth or his claws!). I think he rather enjoys having her as his personal playmate. He tolerates her handling which is not as... considerate... as I'd prefer it to be.
Every morning when she gets out of the shower, he joins us in the bathroom to lick the water off of her legs as I dry her off. He then joins us in her bedroom as I do the routine with her hair and she gets dressed. He seems to enjoy getting into mischief during this time, finding any rogue socks or underwear to chew on. Last Thursday was a two hour delay before school, so we had abundant light in her room during the morning routine. I had to document a glimpse of what goes on most mornings with the two of them.
